Caron Simply Soft Party- Purple Sparkle
Let me tell you about this dumb yarn. But first, the back story!
2015 was a blur because me and my sister-in-law were at the height of our partying ways. I want to say that we were celebrating her birthday all week long and got absolutely trashed one night. Because Wal-Mart was 24/7, that's where we headed afterwards, and drunk me is a compulsive spender. I purchased the Xbox One and four skeins of this stupid yarn, being egged on by an equally drunk sister!
To credit, purple is one of my favorite colors so there was that.
This yarn is gorgeous, no lie. The problem is that the "sparkles" are made of thin nylon? Whatever it is, it tends to snag on the hook which makes for a very frustrating time. Loved how the colorway came out, hated the labor in producing things.
So, I wrote down the pattern instructions because yay, I made my own pattern. Four years later, looking over the instructions, I found them a bit confusing so I will try to give you a better, edited version.
What You Will Need
Medium (4) Worsted Yarn- honestly, whatever yarn you want to use but the one I used was this one
G/4MM Hook- or whatever hook you desire. Honestly, the smaller the better
Elastic Hair Tie- black preferred
Scissors
Optional: Stitch Markers and Yarn Needle- your small hook should suffice to weave the end in and it's only two rounds so no dire need for a stitch marker
Abbreviations
Rnd- Round
SL ST- Slip stitch
CH- Chain
DC- Double crochet
Beg- Beginning
Rep- Repeat
ST- Stitch
Notes: The reason that I recommend a black hair tie is because no matter how many DCs you do around it, stretching it will expose even a tiny bit of the hair tie. This is why most scrunchies are made from fabric and not yarn. If you're okay with that, use whatever color hair tie you want! Otherwise, try to match the yarn color with the color of the hair tie used.
I did not worry about gauge for this one. Quite honestly, I hardly ever do 😆
Start with a slip knot on your hook then:
Rnd 1: SL ST over the hair tie. CH 3. DC around the hair tie (the first and only time I made this, I pushed the stitches together as much as I could to cover the hair tie. This caused it to ruffle which I didn't intentionally mean for it to do but, beautiful mistakes, man! I didn't count my stitches though so, DC around until you actually can't anymore). SL ST into beg CH 3 (third CH).
Do not turn.
Rnd 2: CH 3. *DC, CH 3, DC into next ST. Rep from * around. SL ST into beg CH 3 of rnd. Fasten off and weave in end.
That's it! If the CH 3 between the DCs is a bit too spacey for you, reduce the number of chains. I haven't tested it out on any other yarn or hook but for the Party yarn, the CH 3 is not noticeable and made more ruffles.
I know that the pattern is super easy and someone else could have very well written this pattern out but I have yet to see a scrunchie written out in this manner. If you use this pattern, kindly give credit where credit is due until I find out that this is a common pattern. Feel free to sell to your heart's content!
Happy Hooking and Stay Safe!
